First Skydive 101

By Skydive Geronimo Aug 15, 2021

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and skydive for the first time.   Kudos to you because making that decision is huge.   And now that you’ve taken that first step, actually doing your first jump is an even bigger deal.  It will be super-sized amazing on a scale that you’ve never experienced before.

But no doubt you have some questions and probably some jitters too.

If you’re planning your first skydive, you’ll find this article helpful as it unpacks all the important things you need to know.  It will help settle your nerves and prepare you for the time of your life!

Tip 1: Do Some Homework

Knowledge is empowering and the more you find out about the whole process ahead of time, the better.   Read reviews on your chosen skydiving company and check out the FAQs on their website.    The more you know, the more comfortable and relaxed you’ll feel.  And if you still have unanswered questions, it’s a good idea to call the company and get clarity and reassurance.

And if you need some extra encouragement, check out skydiving videos on YouTube or on the skydiving company’s website.  The smiles on the faces of the jumpers will tell (and sell) the story!

Tip 2: Get a Good Night’s Sleep

When your mind is racing and you’ve got butterflies in your stomach, it’s not always easy to get a good rest.  But it is important to be in a good headspace on the day of your first skydive, so lay off heavy foods and alcohol the night before and try to get to bed early.

Tip 3: Aim for a Balanced Meal Beforehand

It’s a myth that you’ll feel sick if you eat before you jump.  The fact is, you’re less likely to feel nauseous if you have something in your stomach – so eat normally and in moderation.  And remember to stay well hydrated (with water!)  You can always pack some snacks, so if things take a little longer than you anticipated, you’ve got something to nibble on.

Tip 4: Dress Down

This is one occasion when being a high flier doesn’t mean dressing to impress.  Wear clothes you feel comfortable in, and avoid things that are extra tight or excessively baggy.   Tassels, pom-poms, loose jewellery and other dangly bits are also a no-no.    Simple is good.  Stick to close fitting garments on the bottom (such as leggings or denims) and a T-shirt or long-sleeved top.  Closed shoes with a flat sole are a must.

Remember, it’s chillier on cloud nine than it is on the ground, so it’s a good idea to wear an extra layer.

Tip 5: Tie Your Hair Back

If you’ve got long hair, it’s a good idea to tie it back because you don’t want your luscious locks whipping around your face and getting in the way.

Tip 6: Practise Some Breathing Exercises Beforehand

Nothing can prepare you for the adrenalin rush of your first jump.  It’s next level exhilaration and while nerves and trepidation are a normal part of the build-up, you want to be in the right state of mind to take it all in.  Practising some deep breathing techniques will help quell your nerves and relax your mind and body ahead of the best day ever!

Tip 7: Expect the Unexpected

Skydiving can’t be put into words.  First-timers expect it to feel like being on a roller-coaster or a bungee jump with a stomach-dropping sensation.   But it’s nothing like that.   Even though you’re free-falling at 200kms an hour, you still feel supported and buoyant, almost as if you are hovering over a massive fan.   And that doesn’t explain it properly either.   Whatever you think you’ll feel – it’s guaranteed to be nothing like you expected.  But it is guaranteed to be one of the best experiences of your life.

Your skydiving instructor understands how you are feeling.  They’ve been a first-timer before too!  They’re aware of your nerves and if you’re doing a tandem jump, they’ll explain everything as you go along and make sure that you are comfortable and at ease.  A tandem skydive also gives you the ultimate rush without the training and responsibility that comes with having to learn to jump solo.

These tips come from Skydive Geronimo, an award-winning Perth skydiving company that offers tandem jumps over Rottnest Island.  ‘Rotto’ as it is affectionately known, is one of the most picturesque locations in Australia for skydiving, offering sensational views along the majestic Indian Ocean coastline and unique beach landings.
