How To Get The Most From Your Skydive Experience

By Skydive Geronimo Aug 01, 2023

When you jump out of a plane, there’s one thing you can be 100% certain of.  You’ll never experience a feeling like it doing any other activity, anywhere, anytime.  There’s simply nothing in this world which compares to the sensation you get when you skydive.

Having said that, if you’re skydiving for the first time, it’s a good idea to do some prep work in the lead-up to your jump so that you can immerse yourself fully in the moment when the time comes.

Skydive Geronimo has been leading the way in skydiving in Australia for many years and with tens of thousands of jumps under our belts, we think we’re in a great position to offer some insider tips which will enhance your skydiving experience.

Tips for getting the most from your skydive experience

A good thing to remember from the minute you book your skydive is that any feelings of nervousness, fear or apprehension are actually a good thing.  Those butterflies can add to the hype and anticipation and contrary to what you may think, will actually elevate your experience.

Tip 1      Practice some breathing exercises

Deep breathing is a proven technique for controlling your physical and emotional response and is a great skill to have under your belt when you need to calm things down.  Nerves are natural, so it’s a great idea to practise a simple breath sequence for the days leading up to your jump and on the day.

A simple 5:2:5 sequence which involves inhaling for a count of five seconds, then holding your breath for two seconds before exhaling over a further five seconds works really well, and you should do it for six deep breaths.  You’ll be amazed at what a calming effect it has and you can use this technique at any time before your jump in order to relax and still your body and mind.

Tip 2      Plan your jump day

The last thing you want is to be in a rush and feeling stressed and anxious about being late.  The more prepared you are, the better.  Leave yourself plenty of time to get ready and get to the dropzone so you can be fully focused on the briefing and able to savour every moment of this massive day.

Tip 3      Watch what you eat and drink in the lead-up to the jump

Hydration is important but save the liquid celebrations for the afterparty!  You really don’t want to skydive with a hangover.  Eat normally the day before and have a light meal on the day of your jump.  It’s not a good idea to skydive on an empty stomach, so even if you’re not hungry, you should try and give your body some decent nourishment to fuel your jump.

Tip 4      Dress appropriately

It’s windy up there, which is why we recommend you wear comfortable, well-fitted clothing and avoid anything with tassels, strings or loose bits that could flap around.  In the warmer months, it’s absolutely fine to jump in shorts or leggings and a T-shirt.

Open-toed sandals and thongs aren’t allowed – you have to wear enclosed shoes with a flat sole (eg trainers or casual sneakers).  And if you’ve got flowing locks – you’ll need to tie them back.

Tip 5      Bring your mates

Your first tandem skydive is a momentous occasion, so having friends and family around to celebrate with you will take this experience to the next level of awesomeness.  Spectators are welcome at our beach landing zones to make that high-five even sweeter – so make sure you extend the invitation to your nearest and dearest.

Tip 6      Get the video

Trust us, you’ll want to watch and share your video and pics again and again and again!  Doing your first skydive is a massive achievement and having it professionally recorded is a must.  It’s the best way to relive those magic minutes and prove to your mates, your kids and grandkids that you were once a flying superhero!
