The Top Questions First-Time Skydivers Ask: Insights from Glenn Stutt

By Glenn Stutt May 20, 2025

Skydiving for the first time is a thrilling experience, often accompanied by a mix of excitement and nerves. To help ease any apprehensions, we sat down with Glenn Stutt, Owner, Director, and Chief Instructor at Skydive Geronimo. With over 30 years in the skydiving industry and over 20,000 jumps under his belt, Glenn shares his insights on first-time jumpers’ most common questions.

  1. What does it feel like to jump out of a plane?

Many expect a stomach-dropping sensation similar to a rollercoaster, but skydiving offers a unique feeling. The freefall is exhilarating, with wind rushing past you, but it’s more like floating than falling. Once the parachute deploys, there’s a serene descent, allowing you to take in breathtaking views, especially over Rottnest Island.

  2. Do I need any experience or training beforehand?

No prior experience is necessary. Tandem skydives are designed for beginners. Before the jump, you’ll receive a comprehensive briefing. During the skydive, you’re securely harnessed to an experienced instructor who manages the technical aspects, letting you enjoy the ride.

  3. What’s the scariest part?

For most, the anticipation during the plane’s ascent is the most nerve-wracking. However, once the door opens and you take the leap, adrenaline takes over. The actual jump is swift, and many find it less intimidating than anticipated, often landing with a newfound sense of exhilaration.

  4. What if I panic or change my mind at the last second?

It’s natural to feel nervous. If you decide not to jump while still on the ground, that’s entirely okay. However, once airborne, things progress quickly. Instructors are trained to handle hesitations, and many who were initially apprehensive often describe the experience as the best decision they’ve made.

  5. Is it worth it?

Absolutely. Skydiving over Rottnest Island offers unparalleled views and a sense of accomplishment. Beyond the adrenaline rush, it’s about pushing personal boundaries and creating unforgettable memories.

  6. What should I wear for the skydive?

Comfort is key. Wear enclosed shoes with flat soles, like sneakers. Dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. In warmer months, shorts and a t-shirt are suitable, while in cooler weather, opt for something warmer.

  7. Are there any age or weight restrictions?

The minimum age for tandem skydiving in Australia is 16, with those under 18 requiring parental consent. While there’s no upper age limit, participants should be in good health. There’s a weight limit of 95kg, but individuals up to 110kg may be accommodated upon assessment

  8. Can I bring my own camera?

Due to safety regulations, tandem passengers cannot carry personal cameras during the jump. However, Skydive Geronimo offers professional photo and video packages to capture your experience

  9. How long does the entire experience take?

From check-in to landing, the experience typically lasts about two hours. This includes the briefing, flight, jump, and return to base.
