Best Places to Visit in Perth for a True Blue Aussie Experience
Ready to go true blue (AKA, full-on Aussie) in Perth? You’ll be glad to know that residents take as much – or probably even more – pleasure from the areas that every visitor should explore when enjoying the world’s most remote city.
From King’s Park to skydiving over Rottnest Island, here’s the inside story on the not-to-be-missed, authentic places and activities that you need to check out in this gorgeous corner of the planet we all call home…
- Koalas and kangaroos at sunset: It doesn’t matter how many times you see them, these critters will always bring a smile to your face. Head to Yanchep National Park at either sunrise or sunset and you’re virtually guaranteed to see Australia’s iconic marsupials eating, hopping and generally hanging out. Be sure to take the raised koala viewing boardwalk and look up into the branches of the eucalyptus trees for the chance to spot these cute creatures. Once you’ve watched to your heart’s content, head to the Yanchep Inn for some typical Aussie pub grub.
- Swim with dolphins at Rockingham: What’s more magical than swimming with wild dolphins? Perth Wildlife Encounters will take you out to the gorgeous bays around Rockingham, where you’ll enter the water to swim amongst dolphins in their natural habitat. This is by far one of the most authentic experiences that allows you to be in the water with these magnificent creatures. No tricks, no feeding, no captivity – just the opportunity to tick off a bucket list activity in the most natural, kindest manner possible.
- Enjoy true blue wildlife at Caversham Wildlife Park: This family-run natural attraction has been welcoming locals and visitors since 1988. Interactive experiences delight all ages, with penguins, wombats, koalas, kangaroos and over 200 other Aussie animal species all at home within the park. Don’t miss the farm show and the chance to get involved with all the activities that take place on a true blue Aussie farmstead.
- Picnic in King’s Park: Living like a local doesn’t get much more real than this. Pack an esky and find a spot in this wonderful expanse of green space – it’s probably one of the best urban parks on the planet, with incredible views over the city and the Swan River. And talking of the river…
- Cruise Perth’s iconic waterway: From short meanders on the river to day-long trips that include a restaurant and – for those who like to imbibe – some wine tasting at some of the world’s most famous wineries, you can’t say you’ve done Perth like a local until you’ve spent some time on this famous watercourse.
- Hit Cottesloe Beach: Beaches don’t get much better than this, so it’s no surprise that it’s a true local favourite. White sands, crystal-clear water, jaw-dropping sunsets – plus a host of beachside cafes, bars and eateries to choose from. Don’t forget your snorkel and mask…
- Grab a quokka selfie: Rottnest Island is a quick ferry ride from Fremantle – and is home to some of the cutest creatures you’ll ever see – quokkas. One of the smallest marsupials, these gorgeous furry beasties are super-tame, meaning you can get right up close to snap that ubiquitous selfie.
- Skydive over Rottnest Island: Aussies are known for their adventurous spirit – and it doesn’t get much more adrenaline-inducing than this. No experience required, you’ll board your aircraft at the tiny Rottnest airstrip and soar up to 15,000 ft into the sky before – gulp – flinging yourself out of the door (safely attached to an instructor, don’t worry) for an incredible freefall before the chute opens to sedately float you back to earth.
Skydive Geronimo is the only operator licensed to offer skydives over the idyllic Rottnest Island. There is nothing – and we mean, nothing – else like it… From the exhilarating flight up, seeing the Perth CBD from the air and the incredible bird’s eye view of this island jewel, it doesn’t get much more true blue than this…
