Best Take Insta Pics in Perth
Any online search will return a bucket-load of Instagram-able locations in Perth. Many are iconic, so – if you want something a little more original – then it’s time to think outside the box.
From a wide-angle, bird’s eye view of one of WA’s most famous islands to the must-visit King’s Park, add your own stamp by adding a creative twist that’ll make even the most commonly photographed locations stand out as unique.
Shoot from Low Down
An easy way to add a different perspective is to shoot from a low angle. This provides a view we rarely see – it makes us feel small while the world above appears larger than life.
Kneel, crouch or even lie on the ground and angle your phone or camera lens upwards. The foreground is also a key element, so experiment. Water, leaves, grass, flooring… The smallest details can make a huge difference to your Insta-worthy image.
Some great Perth locations to try this out include:
- The Rainbow Sea Container: A modern arched sculpture composed of vibrant-coloured shipping containers in the delightful town of Fremantle is a must-snap for every visitor. Sex up your image by experimenting with different low-down angles – and remember, you don’t necessarily need to include the whole exhibit to achieve those sought-after likes and loves…
- Swan River Bridges: Both the Matagarup and Boorloo Bridges are great structures that offer a virtually infinite number of low-down perspective opportunities. The latter is also festooned with lights from sunset onwards, providing even more creativity for the adventurous photographer.
- Perth’s CBD: Compact and walkable, the CBD is jam-packed with places to snap an awesome image. You’ll also see colourful murals and street art as you wander, all of which provide fascinating backdrops for the perfect selfie. While others will undoubtedly be doing the same, using low-down angles will ensure that your shots show the area in a completely different light.
Shoot from up high
Doing this requires often requires some effort. You (or your photo buddy) can use anything to change the vantage point. From staircases to rooftops, a drone to simply holding your phone/camera at arm’s length above your head, this angle creates an illusion that reduces the size of the subject.
Some of the best takes in Perth include:
Omeo Shipwreck: Located at Coogee Beach, there’s a very handy flight of steps that automatically put you in an enviable position of height. The water here is crystal clear, making it a great place to snorkel. This adds another ‘shoot from up high’ photo op, as you can photograph downwards into the ocean depths to get some fab underwater shots of the marine life that’s made the wreck its home.
Mundaring Weir: Found in the Perth Hills, the weir itself offers a great high-up perspective from which you can shoot. You can also check out the Golden View Lookout platform. This is fab place to grab a selfie with a difference, perhaps with a focus on something other than you – or just a section of your face or body…
Skydive over Rottnest Island: The ultimate up-high shot – a picture from 15,000 feet above terra firma as you freefall back towards one of the most beautiful locations on earth. Rottnest seen from this height is incredible, with the white sand beaches framing the rich vegetation and the shimmering hues of the ocean looking like a shot from Google Earth.
A quokka selfie: You can’t visit Perth without getting the obligatory quokka shot. Make yours stand out from the crowd by using either of the above perspective options. Shoot from the ground up to make this small marsupial appear gigantic – or accentuate its diminutive size by taking the picture from a high vantage point.
Playing about with angles for your Insta pics is a matter of trial and error. The smallest angle change can make an incredible distance to the final shot. Even moving a few metres laterally can transform a good picture into an awesome one.
A few other Perth and surrounding area spots not to be missed include:
- The King’s Park War Memorial.
- Elizabeth Quay.
- Lake Clifton thrombolites.
- Kangaroo and koala street art at Forest Square car park, Subiaco.
- Yanchep Lagoon.
- Jacaranda trees at Applecross.
- The Swan Valley.
- Bells Rapids Park.
- Araluen Botanic Park.
- London Court.
